Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a cap fitted over a tooth that is damaged or whose appearance you are not happy with. There is not just one material: zirconia, E-max (glass ceramic), porcelain-fused-to-metal and temporary crowns each have different strengths for different situations. Choosing the right one depends on where the tooth sits, how much of it is still sound, and what you expect aesthetically.
Key Benefits
- Metal-free and biocompatible
- Natural translucency
- Resistant to staining
- Gentle on the gum line
- Durable for everyday use
Types of Crowns
Zirconia is the metal-free option with high strength; it can be used on both front and back teeth and is the safest choice if you clench or grind. E-max (glass ceramic) has the highest light transmission and gives the most natural result on front teeth, but it is not as resistant to chewing forces at the back as zirconia. Porcelain-fused-to-metal is more economical, yet over time it can leave a grey line at the gum margin, which is why it is now rarely chosen for visible areas. Temporary crowns are the short-term protection fitted for a few days while your permanent crowns are being made in the laboratory. At your assessment we state tooth by tooth which material suits, and write the reasoning into your written plan.
Who Is It For?
Zirconium crowns suit patients with heavily filled, cracked or root-canal treated teeth that need full coverage, as well as those who want to correct the colour and shape of visible front teeth. They are a good choice if you have had metal-ceramic crowns before and disliked the grey line that appears at the gum over time. Because zirconium is metal-free, it is also suitable for patients with known metal sensitivities. If your teeth are healthy and only the colour bothers you, whitening or veneers may be a more conservative option and we will tell you so.
How the Treatment Works
The tooth is prepared under local anaesthesia by removing a thin, even layer of the outer surface. We then take a digital scan rather than a conventional impression, which is more comfortable and more accurate. Temporary crowns protect the teeth while the permanent ones are milled and layered in our laboratory. At a try-in appointment you see the shape and shade before anything is fixed, and adjustments are made if you want them. The final crowns are bonded once you are happy with the result.
Your Treatment in İzmir
A typical zirconium case is completed in five to seven days in a single trip, usually across three or four appointments. This makes it one of the most practical treatments to combine with a short stay in İzmir. You receive a fixed quote per crown before you travel, including the laboratory work and all appointments. We help with transfers and hotel arrangements, and the clinic is a short drive from the city centre.
Aftercare and Longevity
Zirconium is one of the strongest ceramics used in dentistry and resists chipping well. With good hygiene, crowns commonly last ten to fifteen years and often longer. They do not discolour from coffee, tea or smoking, although the natural teeth and gums around them still need care. Brush twice daily, clean between the crowns with floss or an interdental brush, and have a professional clean once a year. Avoid using your front teeth to bite very hard objects.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose zirconia or E-max?
It depends on where the tooth sits. On front teeth, where light transmission matters, E-max usually gives the more natural result. On back teeth, where chewing forces are high, the strength of zirconia comes to the fore. If you clench or grind your teeth, zirconia may be recommended even at the front. In most patients the two are combined: E-max in the front zone, zirconia at the back. Which tooth gets which is written into your treatment plan along with the reasoning.
How many visits are needed?
Zirconium crowns are usually completed within 5–7 days in a single trip.
Do zirconium crowns look natural?
Yes. Zirconium transmits light in a way that is very close to natural enamel, so the result blends with your own teeth.
Will the crowns stain over time?
Zirconium is highly resistant to staining from coffee, tea and smoking, unlike natural enamel or composite materials.
