Gummy Smile Treatment
A gummy smile is when more gum than usual shows above the upper teeth when smiling. It generally has one of three causes: the gum covering part of the tooth, the upper lip lifting too far, or the structure of the upper jaw. Which cause applies determines what the treatment will be — which is why an accurate diagnosis comes first.
Who Is It For?
It suits patients who are unhappy with how much gum shows when they smile. Where excess gum tissue is the cause, laser gum contouring is usually sufficient and gives a permanent result. Where the cause is bone structure or lip movement, treatment differs; in some cases the solution lies beyond dentistry, and we will tell you that plainly.
How the Treatment Works
First the smile line and gum level are measured and the true length of the teeth established. If there is excess gum tissue, it is reshaped with a laser under local anaesthesia; the procedure is short and requires no stitches. Healing is complete within a few days. Where needed, this is planned together with veneer or crown treatment.
Aftercare and Permanence
The result of laser gum contouring is permanent. Regular brushing and interdental cleaning matter for keeping the gums healthy; gum inflammation can cause the gum level to change over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is gum contouring painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so you feel no pain during it. When a laser is used there is very little bleeding and stitches are usually unnecessary. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal, and we recommend avoiding hot and spicy food for a short period. Most patients return to eating normally the day after the procedure.
Is the result permanent?
The result of laser contouring carried out for excess gum tissue is permanent. However, gum inflammation or poor hygiene can cause the gum level to change over time. Regular oral care is the most important factor in maintaining the result.
Is it enough on its own, or do I need veneers too?
If the only issue is gum level, laser contouring alone is sufficient. But if you also want to change the length, colour or alignment of the teeth, gum contouring is planned together with veneer or crown treatment. Which applies becomes clear during the smile design stage.
